What Should Be Included in a Fire Safety Plan for an Industrial Building

A fire safety plan for an industrial building will be very similar to the fire safety plan for a commercial building. The plan itself will be quite long, a sophisticated plan of action that will encompass several pages and cover a lot of material. Below we will outline for you the key points.

  1. Have a plan.

The most important part of your plan is to have one. The plan needs to be designed well in advance of needing it, and must take into consideration the size of the building, the number of employees and/or others inside as any given time, and what the potential fire hazards are.

  1. Objectives

The fire safety plan for any type of building or business should have clear objectives to evacuate everyone safely out of the building and prevent as much as possible injury to employees or visitors and damage to the building and/or contents. This may be more complex in an industry setting where machinery or chemicals or high heat may be involved. Below are some other parts that much be addressed in a fire safety plan for an industrial building or site:

  1. There should be a clear line of command with the responsibilities assigned to each person in case of emergency, and how to contact them.
  2. Everyone needs to know what they are supposed to do if necessary and where to do it, such as where staff should meet safely outside in the event of a fire drill. Or, for example, how to put the elevators on emergency bypass.
  3. Floor fire wardens need to know what their duties are including safeguarding anyone with limited mobility and shuffling others out of the building.
  4. Whatever fire-fighting equipment is available should be listed carefully marked and shown on an overall map. Staff should be trained how to access and use the equipment appropriately in case of emergency, such as hoses or fire extinguishers or fire alarms or sprinkler systems.
  5. There should be floor plans available, lists of contact information, and records of purchase or inspections of relevant equipment at the end of the ledger or notebook.
