Earthquake Preparedness Strategies for Vancouver

An earthquake is very difficult to predict, and people have been predicting “The big one” for years. Because it could happen at any moment, earthquake preparedness in Vancouver is very important. Whether you are a small business, or a large corporation, you need to make sure you are prepared and ready to protect you and everyone else by having clear safety plans.

What is a safety plan?

An earthquake safety plan is a document that outlines procedures and precautions for preparing for, and remaining safe during an earthquake. A comprehensive safety plan should:

-        Identify potential hazards such as securing shelves and furniture to the walls, storing large and/or heavy items on low shelves, strapping overhead fixtures with safety wire, and much more.

-        Identifying safe spots both indoors and out, such as under secure desks and table, in door frames, and away from previously identified hazards such as windows, heavy items, power lines or trees.

-        Educating yourself and your team of proper protocol during an earthquake, contacting emergency services, proper evacuation routes, and identification of potential hazards. Education might include regular earthquake drills and meeting points.

-        Have emergency supplies ready to go, including flashlights with extra batteries, food and water rations, and medicine and first aid kits.

Having a well thought out safety plan can be the difference between life and death when the big one finally comes. If you require help in identifying and building your safety plan, make sure to contact Vanfire for assistance. It may be the smartest decision you ever make.
